One of my tanks currently has ich and i have moved the fish to another tank to be treated. Am i correct in thinking that the ich will die in around two weeks due to the abcense of fish??
There are also two shrimps left in the tank would that keep the ich alive of do they not effect and live on shrimps?
Im a bit off a noob so help is appriciated
Many thanks
Andy

I'm a bit of a noob myself so anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. From what I've read, shrimp cannot be infected with ick or carry it. I've never had shrimp so I don't know about the conditions they need, but it wouldn't hurt to crank the heat to 82 F or so if they can tolerate it. I've heard ick will die in as little as 2-3 days without a host, so a couple weeks should take care of it. Again, this is just IMO. Good luck!

Well this is what I was lead to believe also, after having a browse around a few websites, I'm sure on what heat they can tolerate but I'm sure that the length of time should cure it if we are correct in believing shrimps cannot contract ick :D cheers for the reply, anybody else able to shed more light on the matter please do so. . .
Cheers

Easy it is a parasite so with out a host it will die. so yet it will be gone if you leave the tank empty. Just remember that at low temps its life cycle is slower so it can live longer with out a host.

Bring the temp over 80F 90F would be best let sit for 2-3 weeks and your tank should be free and clean of all ich parasites. even at 50F the ich will die with out a host it just will take a heck of alot longer. like a few months.

the larval stage can live in the substrate for some time without a host actually. i would increase the temp of the tank if able, to 84F, add aquarium salt at 2tablespoons/gal. treat with ich meds without fish in the tank if you are able.
do a really big (or several really big) waterchanges before adding fish. put a pinch of fishfood in ever day (or until it disappears) into the tank every day to keep the filter cycled, until you put more fish in the tank.
cheers

Cheers for the reply's everyone, especially the last one as it got me up in time for work :) anybody know what temperature the shrimps can tolerate? As I was keeping them in to keep the tank cycling.
Cheers
