i for one have my doubts if this statement applies to actinics, but ppl far more knowledgeable than me would say even these would not cause algae.
i personally am not prepared to test the theory tho! :0)

I would love to test it, although going to Uni next week prevents me from doing so.
Actinic lighting CAN actually be used for planted tanks. It applies like every other bulb we have over our tanks. Too much light and not enough nutrients or CO2 will result with algae, but that's just like with any other type of lighting. Actinic linked to algae is just a myth really passed on over and over. I would be really great if someone could write up a little journal though regarding this, showing two t8 actinic bulbs over a planted tank with good nutrients and good CO2, showing how well the tank actually does and that the tank doesn't result in algae.

i did ask the question here if anyone is interested:

did this ever work out for you as I am about to try it

Another little deviation off topic. Would the actual light output in Lumens not be a better way to set up/determine a correct lighting plan for an aquarium rather than the wattage rating of the tube?

Fellas this thread is 4 years old, and the vast majority of those responding in it are no longer around here.

To address you question, Kirky, PAR (photosynthetically available radiation) or PUR (photosynthetically useable radiation) would be best for measuring light.
