As some of you have seen I am starting a planted mbuna with assorted species of Anubias. If I add more plants will I need co2 at any point? If so when should I add it?

ps I will be adding on to my lighting after x mas so I will need advice on what to get!

tbh anubias need very little lighting and no CO2. The CO2 that is in the water already (respiration etc) should be fine for them.

CO2 is not necessary but you should get better growth with it. I'm not sure if mbuna appreciate the lower pH brought about by CO2 injection though.

This said, I have seen some stunning planted Malawi cichlid tanks that run CO2, not exactly biotope recreations but awesome nonetheless.

As far as lighting I would go for a fairly blue spectrum as this is closer the lighting in the wild, especially at deeper water levels. Higher K = more blue = deeper water as the red part of the spectrum get filtered out. 10000K should do fine. Most mbuna cichlids enjoy grazing on algae too I believe so that shouldn't be too much of an issue.

yeah they love the couple plants I have in there now.

Thanks for your input
