I have a 16 inch freshwater moray and i was wondering whether it is compatible with a freshwater stonefish. I also have a 2.5 ich Monodactylus kottelati and a 3 inch knight goby. I was also planning to get a lawnmower blenny.

A stonefish will eat anything that fits in its mouth. End of story. So, look at the size of the mouth on your stonefish, and act accordingly.

By "stonefish" do you mean Notesthes robusta?

Cheers, Neale

No i was going to get a Batrachus trispinosus or perhaps an Oyster Toadfish. Although a Waspfish (Notesthes robusta) would potentialy be a more sensible chioce. Bottom line is this is my Moray's tank. I want to keep my moray as healthy as possible. Also I just sold my Southern Puffer (Sphaeriods sp? dont remember). It was an awsome fish. 75 gallons seemed okay the way aranged the ornaments. One of the best expieriences with any puffer ive kept i might add. Definately a species id recomend for advanced puffer keepers.

I have lost a couple of small morays to the jaws of doom that belong to a large 10" toad/stone fish (Allenbatrachus species) but at 16" your eel "should" be safe, but as Nmonks has pointed out if the stone fish thinks it can eat the moray it probably will.

Just to clarify that technically you are discussing toadfishes (Family Batrachoididae) here as the "true" stonefishes are of the subfamily Synancinae of the Family Scorpaenidae. Due to casual visual similarities the two groups are often put together, though there are a number of differences and they do not even belong to the same Order. Good old common names... :/

I don't want anyone to think that this is talk of keeping deadly fishes :D

I dunno about the laws over there but over here there are plenty of things capable of killing that you can keep. I guess the difference being that we live with dangerous stuff all around us on a daily basis so there's not much difference to keeping them in the home

There's nothing wrong with keeping deadly fish :p
Apart from the fact that it's illegal, no ;)

Not illegal here. :) It's illegal to SELL them but not to own, you can just order one from somewhere. I.e. my town is ridiculous for animal by-laws...

No selling snakes exceeding 6ft
No selling venomous species of any type of animal at all, whatsoever, period.
No pitbulls, unless they're in at least a 6' securely fenced area. You're not allowed to walk one in public, I think even w/ a muzzle on.
No selling exotic cats (if you want to own one you need a permit)
No selling sharks (lol?!)

You have to have a special license to sell all of those and even a permit to own some. Otherwise if you wanted a venomous species you can just order it from out-of-town. No law on owning venomous/deadly fishies. :)

I bought two 15 inch or so Morays on Tuesday and they seem to be doing ok with no trouble with 2 8 inch or so Toadfish... fingers crossed anyway

you say that, then say
No law on owning venomous/deadly fishies. :)

correct me if I'm wrong, a fish is an animal :shifty:

oh BTW, it may help if you state where in the world you live

You can't sell them. Selling them and owning them are 2 completely different things. You're quite right in that a fish is an animal. An animal you may not SELL if it's poisonous, but there is no law on OWNING one. Meaning stores aren't allowed to have them (for sale) in their stores, but you (the fishkeeper) could order one from elsewhere and own it w/ no trouble.

I live in Kitchener/Waterloo Ontario, Canada.

my point is, how can you buy one legally if no one can sell one legally.
by purchasing one, surely you are aiding and abetting an illegal act,
thus making buying one an illegal act in its own right.

*smacks head*

Ok. My town. My town only (well not only but in the area). It's illegal to sell venomous species. You can, however, OWN one. So, by one going OUT OF TOWN to buy one in a town where it's legal to sell them, you can buy one there, and still be able to OWN it in my town. Or you could just order online. Not illegal in any way, I don't know how you can't comprehend this.

My town you can't sell venomous species but you can own one. Soooo to solve that problem, you go OUT OF TOWN and buy one where they can sell it.

ah so it is a bylaw then and not a law state wide. I got it now
