I actually found that pretty surprising! In addition to them being plucked from the wild:

They where not kept in deep enough water to allow them to swim upright.
They where thrown about from container to container.
They where handled for display.

Can't imagine how stressful it must be for the fish. Whilst wild Discus do look good you can buy tank breds that are very very similar in appearance, I just can't see why you'd want to own wilds but hey, that's just my opinion.

Rant over!

It is unfortunate they way they are treated and some die during shipping. Unfortunately this what all wild caught fish have to go through. Go and talk to the sw/reef keepers. The reason I like wilds is they are more beautiful (imo) and are something different from the domestics. My aim is to breed the Heckels that I recently got, (they are near impossible to tank breed) possibly slightly reducing the need for wild caught in my area.

Things like plecos would'nt be so mad off because at least they wouldn't be on their sides.

That's is pretty sad that they have to swim on their sides.

It wouldnt be as bad for danio's tetra's, dwarf cichlid's, livebearer's( common one's at least), becasue they arent terribly big or tall, so thy would still be able to swim.

This is true. If I were catching/exporting these fish I would give them enough water to stay upright at least. We are very profit orientated, it is a shame. Many SW fish (sorry sw keepers I have nothing against you personally) are caught by cyaniding and dynamiting the water.

At least the Discus are not in this shallow water for long. If it stressed the fish too much they would die and the catcher/exporter would get no profit.

Humans have been treating all animals like #### throughout our history, and not that much has changed. It is a real shame.
