ok so you know when you leave a bucket out for a couple of weeks or so, you get those funny wiggly squiggly things that slalom when you kick the bucket  .. are they ok to feed to your fish?? we thought that it could make good live food for our fish.. what do ya reckon??

"Wiggly squiggly things" hmm...don't think i have seen any of those :D
Seriously though, what do they look like- are they red at all?

Hi, they sound like mosquito larvae. Sold in shops as blood worm! I have used them before from a water tub i had. I used to get a sive and filter them from the rain water and them feed them to my discus.

Would see what others think first, but i never had any problems with using home grown blood worm :), not only free but easily obtainable LOL

Regards
Lawrence

if the bucket was outisde, they're probably some sort of mosquitoe or fly larvae, which should be safe, just drain the water first and give them a good rinse under the tap.... unless they carry the nile virus, they should be safe

as far as i'm aware we don't have the west niles virus in the UK so you should be fine..

I agree that they are mosquite larvae-if you have mosquitos where you are. I routinely feed them to my fish. I just scoop them with a net, rinse, then feed. Here in the US, we do have west nile, but to my knowledge, fish are not susceptable. Just humans, poultry and horses. :)

ummmm

The only issue I see is perhapse by introducing west nile to you fishies you could possibly generate a new variation of the virus and kill off mankind, but hey who knows?

Hense the reason not to use your mouth too syphon the water during a water change.

Fish will not catch West Nile, no worries. If a new strain that effects fish were to evolve, I'm sure it would be in ponds rather than in our tanks :p
Mosquito larvae are perfectly safe to feed your fish, and they will LOVE you for it! I try to net some out of our birdbath and outdoor dog water bowl whenever I think of it; my Betta imbellis in particular like it.

Good posting. Make sure you rinse them well enough, and they will indeed LOVe you like Synirr suggests! :)

That reminds me, i better go check the bucket i deliberately left outside for mosquito larvae! :)

Ok, so I gather that bloodworms are nothing but mosquito larvae. I have a lot of them around :p Malaria is a major killer in India.

Someone once told me that bloodworms are usually available in cooler places, not a hot place like Bombay. But if they are mosquito larvae then I should be able to get 'em easily right? even in my own backyard ?

sorry it took so long to get back to everyone, been away for four days :D !! anyway thanks for all your replies.. not too sure if these are bloodworms, as they are brown, and not red! i would imagine that they are fly larvae then.. which sounds liks they should be fine!!

thanks again!! :)
