Hi Guys,

My first post on this forum site, it looks like I have found all the info I’m ever going to need!!!

My problem is.

I have recently (3 wks) setup a new tank after a 8 yr break from keeping fish. The tank is running brilliantly so far, all toxins are well below tolerances and I have only lost one Neon Tetra so far.

I have noticed my Platy called Skip (the girlfriend insists!!) seems to be a) pregnant and B) he is turning Orange!!! He appears to be a she as she is swelling quite quickly and we are now looking forward to a batch of babies.

My question is:

- Does this colour seem right?
- Do you think she is pregnant?

I have taken the following picture, I hope it helps.

Thanks for all your answers in advanced.

to of my fishes got that aswell a male and female. but it aint as bad as yours. i also want to know what that is

I've seen this orange thing with both mollies and platys before!!! It turned out for most people that it wasn't a disease just an odd color change. It actually has happened only with dalmation mollies and black and white platys so far.

this is just a long shot but it could be the fact that she is pregnant that is causing the change in colour, what im saying is that with the swelling of the belly the scales will be expanding obviously  and this does happen with some types of platy when pregnant, mine was an orange wagtail and that part of her turned yellow then cream then silver until she dropped the fry

yeah but what im tryin to say both male and female one has it

And the platy doesn't look too big yet either. You really need helterskelter and theotheragentm to look at it first. If it's a disease have Wilder look at it! :)

u sure its a platy and not a molly? i didnt know you could get that colour in platys...maybe we just cant get them here is australia. i have seen these coloured mollies with orange in their white spots and it just seems to be their colouring.

id see what the others have to say but i wouldnt be too stressed.

Thanks for the replies. I will keep an eye on her. So how long do you think he's got? I have seperated her into a large hatchery but she goes mental and won't settle down, so each time i let her out! Pain.

mollies do tend to turn white black or orange. mine is getting orange on the bottom

Hi just to clear it up that that's a dalmatian molly and not a platy.

No idea why the colour change (I'll go with modz theory though, as it sound good ;) ) but i can see nothing to be worried about there she looking healthy and defo preggors!!!!

have fun when you have all your baby fish as well ;)

dunno if the pregnant thing is a good theory either. there are two males at work like this.

well see it if gets brighter, these could just have the gold gene as well giving a little base colour. strange though if there was none to start off with though.

Thanks for the confirmation about the pregnancy. Skip seems to be happy today, chasing everything round the tank!!

I’ll let you guys know when she finally drops!!!

For future reference, you can easily tell males from females. You see that rounded fin on her underside? It will be pointed in males. Look at some guppies for a clarification. :)
