i have 6 platies in my tank, one which is only about 3-4 months old right now, and the ratio is 2 males 4 females. so? what the heck? why have there been no signs of babies since day 1? i though you all said these guys are perpetual baby makers. are mine prudes? homosexual? whats the deal??

What all do you have in the tank? How old are all the Platies? Do you have any sort of foliage or cover for voulnerable fry?

my fishes are listed in my sig. i have 2 decor... a sand castle and a rock-like structure... right now i have 2 plants, but i could add 1 or two more (not live), and i have standard gravel and an aquaclear mini filter. the platies are about a year prolly (or just under). got em from my lfs at full size about 3 months ago. well, the wags are newer. got em about a month ago now.

i didnt think what i had in the tank mattered for baby making, only for fry keeping... is something wrong?

another thing... if they do ever breed, will the sunset fires breed with the wags? or not? :/

Have you noticed if they got pregnant at all? If they did, I'd bet the betta got the babies. I accidentally left 1 guppy fry in the tank with a betta, and it didn't know what hit it, didn't have time to dart away or hide, the betta gobbled it up in one quick gulp.

If they're not getting pregnant at all, I don't know...Where did you get them from? I think I read an article somewhere that some livebearers in the petstore are sterile due to stuff given to them to make them more colorful.

They r still quite young i would say give them time to settle down and canoodle with each other.......In 6 months time you be moaning that you have far too many :D If the females do get pregnant there abdomens swelling like balloons and see little black dots in the belly of the mother then they r the fry, but depends how good ya eye sight is......

I have a male and a female molly the male is a bout an inch and a 1/4 long and the female is about 2 inches long i bought them for $0.50 each. I also have a male and a female platy they are about the same size as the female molly. (none of them have ever breed. They are just getting over ick so that is a good thing right now.) I have a newt and an albino corydora.

wow .50 cents each! I live in the wrong place!.....when i want to buy fish a molly of regular breed is around 3.50 and any special kinds are around 4.50! Anyway you can ship some to me ;)

these were still fry and were very small and they don't have any more otherwise i am not sure how much they cost. The male i have is white and the female is gray i really like the white one it is kool.

I'm suprised your newt's not eaten any of your fish, mine took a large platty male (not ment to though) no prob.

on the quetion, I'd also say there to young, but even if they did breed the fry would all be eaten, by everything but the cory.

Right now i don't want them to breed right now and am thinking about getting rid of my newt since it has aten three of my fish.

If you only put the lights on during the weekend then they are probably all messed up. Get a timer and have the lights on for ten hours a day or so. Let them have a regular day/night cycle and their natural cycles should get on track.

oh for petes sake....

k... theres a post in here somewhere about genderchanging swordies? i was asking there if playies do the same thing? ya... tonight, finally, my "once female" sunset fire palty has now finally made up HIS mind... so that solves THier problem... (mumble mumble... now i gotta get some women! sheesh... what a nerd!) :hyper:

and....(drumroll please) i think my wag gals are pregnant (FINALLY!!!)

yaaaaaaaaayyy :D (insert applause) :flex:

so, i will keep you all posted... (hopefully im not seeing what i wanna see...)
but if so, um, should i take the betta out before they drop fry? would that be wise??
