i recently lost an awesome crown tail mail, hyper and macho, looked like a tie dye shirt of blue and red to laziness and lack of any zest for life.
he would flare at any one or anything for any reason unless you said boo then he chickened and swam away as fast as he could go.
I had named him Odin and when i told my 4 year old, he happily proclaimed Odor, that's a fun name! So Odor he was
then he started to get lazy, would spend all his time laying on the bottom trying to blend in with his color coordinated marbles, then i realized he had stopped eating.
i placed him next to my other males who would get in his face and he just hid behind his plant.
I then spent many moments trying to figure out what his problem might be
i then realized that when he was swimming he never used his tail unless he absolutely had to, just his fins, eventually he died and my sad little anorexic fish went the way of all dead fish who have expired their warranty from the pet store.
Now, I have many of these including Matilda a fun loving little blue female, who is now starting this disturbing tendency to not be all that active and not all that hungry and the most worrisome part to me it that she swims around with her tail scrunched together in a slightly downward point( much like anorexic Oder used to do)
I made sure to drip the little blue drops of antibiotics down right in front of his nose but even if he thought this was a refreshing change from blood worms and flakes he was after all anorexic not picky and Did not care one bit about them
someone please tell me what is going on i really want to not loose another one to this mysterious fish depression

What size tank are you keeping your Bettas in and do you have plants, decor, heat and filtration?
Also, what are your water stats?

i keep all my bettas in glas containers of different kinds, i do not know the ph value but i intend to get a kit, they have fake plants, after a bad experience with some killer gravel i use exclusevely glass marbels and i have a bit of java moss in every tank, i change the water often several times a week and more than that with the ones that i suspect the slighest anything with. i do not heat the water because they are in induvidual containers, heating would be very difficult, and i do not keep my house very cool unfortunatley that is a very pricy thing to do in texas, when ever i have been unfortunate to loose a fish i have allways been able to identify what approxematly went wrong but i have been able to find nothing about the tailfin beeing scrunched or clenched together in this way, my female is more active than she was but i have not seen her actualy open up her tail for weeks even if i probe her carefully, she freaks and swim away but she never opens up her tail

Bettas need a tank that is at least 2 gallons but ideally 5 gallons or more. They also need a heater as the temperature can fluctuate and cause your fish stress. I keep mine at about 26-27C.
Clamped fins can be a sign of the water not being warm enough so you really need to check the temperature of the water to see if that is the cause.
