Actually its quite easy to tell the genders apart in livebearers and you have too many fish for a 5gal anyways, although i've never heard of a barobose.

Do you put salt in your tank? I once had a 10G of mollys and I put the recomended dosage of salt and they all died. I've never owned mollys since.

edit: out of curiousity who would hate a fish? I can see some people being cruel to them or even killing all of them for a profit but why would someone hate a fish? well now that I think about it maybe a shark ate my dog or something. Then I might not be to fond of fish. But I don't think that would make me evil.

I think I just might overanalyze things.
