So I'm sitting doing a little reading on this site this morning and the next thing I hear is water spashing everywhere. My Oscar is furiously splashing the water all over the place. I thoght maybe he was hungry so I tried to feed him but he has no interest in it. So I turned he light off think welllll just maybe that was bugging him.......................nope no such luck he spashes around again. He does this about every five minutes for the past 1/2 hour. From doing this he has his bottom lip beatup quite a bit and a little spot on his left side . Does anyone know what could be causing him to do this? Cuz I have no idea why he does it other then he may be able to see himself in the glass and it freaks him out. I don't know but this fish makes me wonder if there is something wroung with him....Anyway thanks for you help in advance

could that 'spot' on his side be some sort of parasite he's trying to dislodge?

:good:

What are your ammonia and nitrite levels? If there are any traces, that could cause him to be spooky at the slightest movement and do what he's doing.

If levels are non-existent, then it could be he's doing it for attention. I've had cichlids do that whenever anyone would be within site and left without stopping to play with them. If you came to the tank they would be fine but if not, they would go nuts like that in what seems a fit of anger. I took out rocks that would hurt them and they still did that but wouldn't hurt themselves.

It sounds like something in the room is spooking the fish. Do you have a ceiling fan?

That's funny you said that. I didn't think of it previously but when I have the lid off from my flowerhorn's tank, he would stare at it for long periods. There's one right over his tank. Just sit and stare and sometimes dive straight down and then back up real quick. Pretty hilarious.

nope there is no ceiling fan or something like that to freak him out it really bothers me though cuz now he has the whole bottom of his moth beat up really bad. It's almost like he's doing for attenion. But when i go out to see him he sometimes stops and sometimes doesn't... I don't know he seems pretty healthy....I'll check the amonia and nitrites and see what that says and go from there...THANKS BY THE WAY

ok so for an update my oscar is not in good shape he has beaten up his/her lower jaw soooo bad now that it is all white also he has a big scratch on the left side of his head and every once in a while he looks like he is gasping for air .......so i am a little scared that Lucifer is really sick Anyway if some one can help me it would be greatly appreciated.................THANKS AGAIN

Gapsig will be due to the extertion, but have you tried doing a water change? chdcking the temp of the tank, making sure it hasn't dropped or increased some how?

Lucifer R.I.P

Did you ever check those water stats? It really matters if you plan to get another fish, so you can figure out what went wrong. When I first got an oscar (I didn't know much of anything about fish) she did she same thing, and after doing research on the internet(which I should have done BEFORE getting her), and testing the water it turned out that it was because of high ammonia levels. All that crap because I didn't know how to cycle a tank first.

my friend has an oscar and he was fine at the start but now if you get to close to the tank bar feeding time he gets real stressed and attacks the side of the tank and water goes everywhere. its a territorial thing!! maybe that was it!!
