I know this forum has people from everywhere, and it can get confusing (for some) on tank volumes.

People from UK have UK gallons
People from US have US gallons

most others have litres....

I think we should all just go by litres?? it would make everything so much easier.
Its so much easier to work out tank volumes too. Plus a gallon is a big size to go by, litres are more of a precise measurement.

Not making fun of countries still using the 'old' imperial system... but isnt it a little ancient?

Just an idea.

Well, it is the same reason countries don't all use the same currency. Why change something if it already works? As I think you already know, this will never happen, and neither will a universal currency. IT is what seperates countries from each other. Things need to be different

Ha. Us uk people use a mix of litres and gallons!

For large amounts we use gallons but for small amounts we use litres!

It would be simpler if everyone used the same measurements, certainly. But with am international forum, it's just not going to happen within our life-times!

the same goes with currency, spelling, grammar, moral values & cultural attitudes.

Vive la difference!

an assortment of reasons. don't mind the error messages; its just from where the poll didn't swap formats properly.

--EDIT--

besides, if your tank is so small that a single gallon (~3.7 liters) makes a substantial difference in its water volume, then its secretly a vase.

sadly i am from the US so this might be harder for us here to convert. sue the measurments are easy but remember that most of the US doesn't know the metric system. e still use the "english" system. i have deemed this the "american" system as the UK uses metric more now (i beleive). i myself can use the metric system (i find it easier because everything is in the powers of 10). but conversion and use of more precise measurements would be great. but as SirMinion said... "...it's just not going to happen within our life-times!..."

I am from the US and I have grown around using gallons, if someone tells me they have a 25 litre tank, I won't have a clue, I would just say, COOL, if someone says that they have a 125 US Gallon tank, I say COOOOOOOOOOL

I grew up in Canada where most things are metric... but I have no idea what a 25 litre tank is either :S
We talk gallons for tanks, litres for gas, km's for distance but feet/inches for height. Go figure

Because theres a lot of people like me who doesnt know how to convert gallons to litres. I was born and raised under gallons. 1 gallon milk, 1 gallon orange juice, 1 gallon sunny delight.

Here in the US most people are born and raised with one kind of measurments for water
;)

I just convert using google all the time. After so many conversions, I'm starting to remeber some. It's 4 litres that's about a US gallon, by the way.

It will take time, effort, patience, and a heck of a lot of money to convert a nation like the U.S. to a whole new system. On top of that people need to re-learn it all, and even though the metric system is sensible enough for anybody to pick up very quickly, this doesn't solve the main reason why they will stay imperial - nobody likes change and it's human nature to resist it.

I've always used gallons and are happy using them, i can use litres but i prefer to use gallons on the whole- guess i'm just used to using them :) .
