Why Does This Happen?

HI all, in all my water changes i do after them the tank is all cloudy and the sand is full of s@#* any idea why this happens and why?

Is the sand fresh? Sounds like you didn't rinse the sand off well enough.

i do regularly with a backscrather thingy and my cories help in the process

when you do a water change you are pouring the water in with too much force, it stirrs up the substrate which releases pockets of organic material (fish poop, dead plant matter, old food,etc)...there are bacteria that eat this stuff...it is just a bacterial bloom and it goes away in a few days tops, right?
nothing to worry about necessarily, but either do more thourough substrate cleaning, or find some way of poruing the water into the tank more gently...wont stir up the water. freeing detritis that the bacteria eat and cause a bloom.

When I first changed my tanks to sand this would happen for the first few months then everything was fine. It just looks ugly for a couple of hours.

Try pouring the new water in over the filter or bit of bogwood/a rock this should help.

If you have an internal filter, you can just connect the hose (if you're using one for your changes) to the spraybar, and that will fill nice and gently from the top

have you been using a gravel vac ?obviously if not then the water running back in will cause it all to fly about, and yeah run the water over something or against the glass

i do us the vacuum sometimes but i dont like it sucking up the sand, from now on i'll run it against the rock or glass thanks all

If you can get a really light plastic dish that floats, that's good to pour the water into. Helps avoid it splashing everywhere or disturbing the substrate.

I always just put my slightly cupped hand in the tank an few inches under the surface level, then pour the water from the buckets into my hand.
