my lfs bybrook barn in ashford kent keep there male bettas in very very small glass bowls.there is no filter or gravel etc in there so how are they surviveing in there???

Unfortunately, some fish stores do this - we have one here that does it, and it's utterly disgusting imo.

They *can* survive in totally horrible conditions, but so can people.. doesn't mean it's a quality of life.

yeah it is disgusting to see but tbh no one in there seems to give a s**t about it.

don't complain to the LFS they will basically say yeah what ever you want to report them try the RSPCA or your local council animal welfare

i dont think the rspca would do much would they.buy i have already wrote complaints and gave bad comment cards.

A lfs near us does this and the manager told me that at least they can't get their fins torn by other tank-mates. The other local lfs has them dotted around the store with one in each tank.

Theres a fish shop in bexleyheath that is horrific for this, every single fish is crammed in. There was a large oscar in a tank that was about an inch bigger than the oscar so it couldn't even turn around.

The company sells alot on ebay and is quite well know for being cheap etc, i just wonder how many of them people buying from them would keep buying from them if they had visited their shop.

My local fish place has several male Bettas singularly in with other fish, one per tank. That seems to work well and the fish are happy.

If I saw a fish shop keeping Bettas in a bowl I'd go mad  Humans can survive in a tiny box, given food once a day, but why the hell should they? Same scenario for Bettas.

My Betta is, in some eyes, spoilt by being in a 10g tank. He LOVES all the space :)

the idea is taht theyre supposed to sell like hotcakes and essentially not be in those conditions for particularly long ie. a short enough time that the water quality doesnt deteriorate too much. unfortunately, theyre quite a bit different to hotcakes

I imagine that most have the water changed at least daily, and turnover of them is generally very high so they are not in-store very long.

I would also guess that most are sold into what turns out to be far worse conditions than they encounter at an LFS.

I disagree,

One LFS here sells them with the tiny tanks that have little japanese symbols on them and is almost like a showpiece, imo nothing can be much worse than being crammed into something that isn't even 1 litre.

Elliew what shop is that in? I'll be sure to steer clear, I'm not far from there and always on the lookout for new shops but I'll be giving that one a miss I think.

So, you think these little tanks are better kept than the conditions at an LFS?

You're getting your wires crossed, the LFS generally do keep them IN these little tanks that they are sold with..

Atleast when sold, SOME will go to owners with bigger tanks.
