Hi. Everytime I buy platties either one of my old ones or the new ones dies.
Is it platties... or is it a curse

No seriously. Do platties die regularly - are they hard to look after?
All my other fish are fine, I haven't had deaths in months or diseases or anything bad. Just my platties which die.
It is only when I buy a new one or two. That's why i say "curse." (joking - I'm not crazy!!!)

Has anyone had their platties die or know if it's common for them to die.

Thanks. very confused sushi -_-

no it isnt common for plattys to die really platys are one of the easiest fish to keep with them they dont really need any special care (what food do you give them)

yeah platies are a really hardy fish. have you checked the ammonia/nitrite/ph levels lately? add some salt ro stress coat perhaps when you add new fish to decrease the stress. how big is your tank & how many platy do you have in there? females/males?

So many people have trouble with platy's..and never find out why...sorry for ur loss.

i've had some trouble with platys but i love them just the same.i got three baby platy for free and they didnt survive.i think that it was because the person i got them from said they were doing some weird breeding mixes so the platy were geneticly defective.but resently one of my other platy took sick she got really thin.probably an internal parasite.shes still alive but shes not getting any better.

it's happened to 3 of my platies. 2 unknown causes and 1 dropsy :/ seems new fish don't last long in my tank (at most 2mos)... but the one born in my tank 5mos ago is doing really well :D i think maybe he's just more accustomed to the h2o params. i bought 2 more platies a month ago and happily found a fry a week ago - i'm hoping they will last ;)

good luck!

They're in my 3 foot tank in my sig. except I've got 1 more than what it says cause i bought 2 and one of my previous ones died.

Theres 3 males and four females. Maybe too many males. I don't think one male is sexually mature tho cause he's never bothered the females yet. I will get more females eventually. Trying to find different colours so they're not all the same.
I have never tested the water perimetres but all my fish are healthy and disease free. The water is kept clean and i've got a power filter in there that does an excellent job.
I don't know what else to say. It's a bit more reasuring I guess that other people have had this happen and not me.
I've got fry from one of them, so there must be something right??????? -_-

Personally I find platies very fragile. I've kept quite a few species, many of them are supposed to be sensitive but they did fine. But my platies die once in a while for no reason. Two of my platies died in a tank where some other fishes breed regularly!

My guess is that they have been overbred, sacrificing the quality of their gene in the process.

My 2c... ;)
