All three of my male mollies, this is so weird... one at a time... it's like their bottom lip swelled up and then fell off, and then they died. Now it looks like one of the girl mollies' lips is doing the same thing. Why is this, and what can I do about it? It's only the mollies that this has happened to.

I asked the pet shop, BTW, and they said, "That happens with mollies."

-_-

And while I am asking questions, my pet shop's fish guy told me that I should only do water changes for tropical fish once every three or four weeks! I thought it was 20% change once a week?

:S

Can't answer your question about Mollies because I have never kept them (someone will be able to though). As for the water changes is defiantely not every 3-4 weeks! It's at least every week, with me its every 2-3 days.

Hope this helps.

Tim

Once a week take no notice of the lfs, you say they swell up, any white patches on the lips or cotton fluffy fungus on them, what colour is the swelling is it the same as the colour of the fish, can you describe it abit more.

Not the writer of this information.
Mouth Rot Flesh eaten away around mouth. Saprolegnia fungus with Pseudomonas or Aeromonas bacteria. Use FUNGUS ELIMINATOR or BINOX. Can spread to other tanks by splashing water or using nets from infected aquarium. Clean nets with NET SOAK.

I have Mollies, and i am pleased to say, there lips have NEVER fallen off, i think the Lfs is telling you fibs, my brother was also told by the Lfs to do a water change every 6 weeks  This is crazy...

Maybe its a bacteria infection from poor water quality?? What are your stats?

Hi, I have 10 Mollies and their lips have never fallen off. They are Dalmation Mollies. In fact in my experience this sort of Molly is very hardy, they have never had any illness. I do 15% water change once a week. Hope the rest of your fish are ok. :)

my platys also have sort of white lips but the lip has never fallen off i dont think theres any thing wrong with mine though.by the way cajun tuna i think your pic is brilliant i had to laugh.

Its most likely mout rot, which there are meds available to treat it for, on the other hand though, i'll give you some info on basic tank maintanence and mollys;

a. For any tank, no matter how lightly its stocked, its advised you do at least a 20-30% water change with dechlorinator once a week.
b. Never wash your filter sponge out more than once every 10days and never wash it out in tap water, the chlorine present in tap water kills off your beneficial bacteria that lives in the filter sponge and helps keep your water clean. If you need to wash the filter sponge out, just remove the gunky bits and don't over clean it, clean it out in water from water changes.
c. You will need to add dechlorinator/water conditioner to any water that goes into the tank- dechlorinator is very vital for having a healthy tank and fish and filter.
d. It is highly advised you buy test kits for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates- ammonia and nitrites should be 0 with no exceptions in a mature/cycled tank and nitrates preferably under 40, if nitrites or ammonia rise above 0 at any point in your tank do a water change to help lower them- never take out more than 60% of water though in a single day though.
e. Mollys prefer a temp between 24 and 26degrees, they need veg as well as high protein foods in their diet so feed your mollys algae wafers or blanched bits of cucumber at least once a week to help keep them healthy, as for alternative meaty foods daphinia, bloodworms, tubifex, krill and freezedried river shrimp are readily accepted but don't feed your mollys these foods every day or they'll get constipated, which can be lethal to fish.
f. Mollys need a tank of at least 15gallons as they are very active fish and male sailfin mollys can reach 4inchs long, you need at least 2-3female per male and no less as mollys belong to the livebearer family and males can harrass females too much if there is too few around. If you have females, be prepared for fry- personally though i would not try to save them as you can easily get over run with fry- females mollys can give birth to over 100fry every 2months and their fry take a year to mature, so raising them is a long term project and you will need a big tank to raise the fry in.
Depending on what other fish you have, the use of aquarium salt is also beneficial to mollys although many fish are intolerant of it so if you do use it make sure you don't have any salt intolerant fish in the tank.
Good luck :)

First of all, my apologies for posting this in the Emergency section... I thought I had posted it on the Beginner board :*) .

Thank you very much for all your advice! I have all the test kits now and test the water regularly, and it is all 0 ps, and the PH and hardness are all right. I didn't know they need veges and such... I will have to go shopping!

Thank you B.C.F.C, the pic reflects my mood most days. I dressed it up for Christmas :D .

Morgan, I had two Dalmation mollies and both their lips fell off :-( !

Wilder, thank you, I will pay closer attention the next time it happens. I am watching my suss female very closely now. If it happens again, I will get the exact description, but I think you are spot-on with the mouth rot, that sounds like it exactly :( .

I am going to try to post on the Beginner board again, I need to have a vent about fish shops. Wish me luck that I get it on the right board this time!

Oh, I am sorry to hear that. My Mollies (not these, their forebearers!) survived atrocious conditions in my tank. All my other fish died, all the Mollies even the fry survived. The bad conditions were due to a Mollie (very small) getting into the filter housing and I didn't even know they could do that. The water turned green and stank to high heaven. I had to strip the tank down and start again. Heartbreaking. As I said before I hope the rest of your fish are ok. :)

Oh dear, Morgan, what a dreadful experience :-( ! All my other fishys are thriving.

But for sure, the one female's lips are going to fall off!

Tokis-Phoenix, I gave them some blanched cucumber last night :D .

Okay, I got a good look at her lips. It is only the bottom lip, and it is extending out. It seems to be getting bigger. The flesh still holding the lip to her mouth is looking very thin. The lip and the flesh are all normal colour, and just look like the rest of her. There is no growths or fuzzy bits or anything icky on her lips. I would happily kiss her lips because it doesn't look like she has anything nasty, but I can also see a tiny tear at each side of her bottom lip where it is starting to come loose :S :-( . This is what happened to the two male dalmations.

Also, about the filter cleaning. When I clean the tank, I have found the filter is full of brown water. I usually squeeze the filter out. Should I keep doing that? Squeeze it in removed tank water to get all the brown gook out from the inside, or is that overcleaning?

Oh lordy, they need to teach a university class in fish-keeping.... :/

What med are you using.

It's called Multi-Cure

0.400 mg/ml malachite green
4.00 mg/ml methylene blue
2.00 mg/ml acriflavene

Aids in the treatment of white spot, velvet disease and fungul diseases in aquarium fish

Her lip... it looks like it has flattened out. The bottom lip is now sticking way out and over the top lip, like a wide, flat bucket.

And what of cleaning the sponge in the filter? Should I squeeze all the gook out when I do the weekly water change?

Just squeeze the majority of the gunky brown water out but not all, sort of like 70% is what i do.
I've never used mulit-cure myself so i can't say on how effective it is but what i usually use is a watered down dose of primafix(slowly increasing the quantitys of med over the days depending on how effective it is) and melafix. Both of these meds combined get rid internal and external bacterial infections plus fungal infections, if you want to change meds make sure you do a 40% water change before hand.
