I came home today to discover that Luna the Kuhli Loach was dead. She was perfectly healthy the night before, eating, swimming around. I checked her body, and found no signs of illness whatsoever. Besides a faded color, she had a strange and odd indent in her forehead. Like someone had bashed her on the head with a shovel and made a dent...
What could've have caused her to die? I did a water change last night, and nothing was out of the ordinary. I did another water change today, and stats came back fine. Why did my lovely Luna die? :-(

Rogue shovel attack in my opinion, when these fish are dragged up by their parents what else do you expect? What with the economic and social crisis my fish have started to turn to thievery and black market organ trading. Gangs roam the streets with shovels, it's total anarchy out there.

Seriously though, just keep an eye on them, these things sometimes happen. Is it possible the mark was just some kind of birth abnormality you have not noticed before?

No, I took a picture of Luna sitting next to Lumpy a day ago, and I checked it. There is no indent at all. Maybe she was swimming around and swam into something sharp too fast? She was out in the open, no were near anything relativley dangerous. If anything, it looks like someone dropped something on her head, like they were gravel vacuuming and accidentally stabbed her with the corner.....But that's impossible, because when I did my water change, Luna was swimming around, no were near the vacuum. And I would've noticed if she'd gotten jabbed by the gravel vacuum. She was fine this morning before I left, but when I came home she was dead.....

Knowing what Kuhli's are like she may have swum into the glass too hard and fast. I kind of hope that is what happened, at least then it would be an isolated incident. Like i say, keep an eye on the tank, maybe watch out for any unusual aggression, though i doubt that is the case TBH.

This was my first thought as well. I've had it happen with my own fish at dusk. They get really nervous and spooked. It's really the same behavior that causes them to jump out. They certainly can get enough velocity to cause physical damage as well. I'm really sorry this happened to you, I know how much you love your loaches so this must be really hard but I am sure it was nothing you did and is just an accident.

Thank you everyone, it's still very sad to think it was self-inflicted...my poor little Luna. She was always the most skittish. But there was no one home to spook here, no one was home until 3:00pm...I wonder what spooked her so hard...I hope none of the other loaches get so scared again.

She's been buried in the backyard with a stone marking her resting spot. I hope however she died it was quick and painless :-(
I hate losing pets...

.
If she was the most skittish it does sound like it was a self inflicted injury and no fault of your own.
Thanks to geckos and fruit bats and the odd owl my birds sometimes get night frights, and I hear them banging around in the avairy. I dread going down to the avairy the next day to see if any of them have broken thier necks in the mad panic. Sadly it happens.

not with it today haha

Personally I quite like fruit bats they make affectionate pets but with the disease they carry which humans can be innoculated against (well one of them any way the other one is still being worked on), they are hated by many people.
One of these days when my trees in the yard get bigger I plan on putting in a bat box for micro bats, they are the cutest little guys and do a fantastic job on insect pests.

He's still always lying on his side.....he's always breathing fast, and I still haven't seen him eat yet...But I guess he's eaten because otherwise he'd be dead...I'm still very concerned for my Lumpy... :(
