Why Are My Convicts At The Top?

My cons [parents + fry] are spending a good amount of time at the top of the aquarium [surface of the water. It's almost as if they are trying to get away from something. Nothing has been added. Water stats and temp are all good. Convicts don't have labyrinth [spelling?] organs do they? This couldn't be from lack of oxygen could it? Could it be a side effect of being cramped? After all they are in a 29 gallon? But I don't think that's it because there is a lot of tank that they aren't in. Maybe they are afraid of their parets? But the parents stay at the top with the kids?

Are they gasping? If so, it may well be oxygen starvation in the making here How many adults and fry are in there, and what size are they all? Also, please can you post numerical results for your water stats, as peoples opinions of fine vary a lot. The make and type of test kit you are using would also be useful to know
