Ok.................................

Two weeks ago set up new tank, filter was already cycled as the tank was second hand and was full with fish, filter was kept wet , went about 5 hours with no ammonia source.

Last week bought 7 kuhli loaches, added to tank (stupidly didn't quarantine). The whole of this week we have had deaths, all in all about 13 fish. It looks like they have whitespot (the Kuhlis had it first-I just didn't notice it until they coloured up and i could see the spots) but there's no flicking. The fish (female bettas) end up laying on the bottom gasping, it's really painful to watch, I've lowered the water level a bit, put an airstone in and treated yesterday for whitespot with interpet treatment. I currently have two girls who aren't looking too great, i've put them both in floating breeding traps so they are closer to the surface but is there anything else I can do to help them/prevent more deaths?

Please help!

Also,

water stats are fine, Ph 7.5 (always been that high) ammonia 0 nitrite 0 and nitrate in the region of 20

Hello & sorry to hear of your losses!

Betta's can breath through the surface, so I doubt it's down to low O2 levels do you think?

Andy

i don't think it's o2 levels, but i do think it has something to do with the whitespot knackering them out so they can't swim to the surface as often for air, if anyone has any ideas why they would be dropping so quickly, bearing in mind that they aren't flicking Id be very grateful!

Sorry to hear of your probs - sounds horrid :-(

where did you get the khulies from? You're in my neck of the woods and I bought some last week from maidenhead aquatics in wimborne and I'm just wondering if its the same batch??

Hope your girls get better

don't worry sarah they were from Southern Aquatics in Poole- hence I was very stupid to not quaranitine but you just don't think about these things.... I'm sure yours will be ok as Maidenhead are usually very good.

I hope they get better, and I really hope I don't lose anymore it's been really heartbreaking watching some of them struggle, but I'm really trying my hardest.

The general quality of fish in SA has not been too hot recently!!

No I must be honest I've been to SA at Poole and Christchurch and tbh the quality of the fish does leave a lot to be desired

Keeping my fingers crossed for ya {{hugs}}

Thank you.....I'll let you know how things go I'm just hoping I don't lose anymore! I thought another one would be dead tonight but she's a real fighter.... she's had a turn and she's now acting normally. Just hope the rest are of the same mindset!

Small world! SA in XChurch is walking distance from where I work and 4.5miles from where I live

I think the one in XChurch at least has good quality stock and I think it's a good shop that one. The fishies / shrimp I get were free of disease & healthy.
(A bit like a Tardis inside don't you reckon).

the poole one is definitely worse..... I've had another 3 deaths...is there anything else I can do on top of what i've done to help them?

Are you certain its whitespot? The Symptoms you describe sound very much like the effects of velvet which is a far nastier and more difficult to treat disease.

Check the fish for signs of a greyish cloak over their slime coating and trails of slime around the gill openings, the spots will also shine a goldish colour when viewed with a small torch with the tank and room lights off (at night or a darkened room obviously).

I am so sorry it feels awful and you feel so helpless.

I lost some recently too.

Not from the same thing but I know its a shock.

TBH most of the fish look healthy, the odd one or two have white spots, no greyish cloak or trails of slime, I will shine a torch at them tonight and see what happens, whatever it is I think it came from the Kuhlis.

Thanks Tetra Queen it's really horrible isn't it?

Hi Alessa how are the girls any better, if you have a uv unit pop it into the tank, it can't hurt to catch any floating organisms ?

hiya- I had one running in the old tank - set the new one up just after the first death, thinking it might be too late but it might help clear anything in the water, we had to get the larger internal model for the new tank otherwise I just would have swapped the other one straight over.

Some good news: Had 2 more Kuhli deaths (I am convinced it was them) and all the girls (who are left...) are OK today thank christ for that!

Gave them all some grub this morning and they looked so hungry as they haven't touched any food for the past couple of days- at least they are eating.

I can't believe what happened it was just so sudden.
