Whoever Said Fish Had No Memory?

Ahhh its good to see another psychology person on the board! :friends:

No doubt we'll have people contesting us - but virtually ANY behaviour (animal and human) can be explained by some form of learning conditioning. We have this brilliant lecturer who's trying so hard to convince us all that behaviourist principles are the best! With all the experimental evidence, it's hard to see why anyone disagrees.

My fish just know that people mean food, but sometimes they are skittish around strangers. I guess I am really tall so they recognize that people my size mean food. Idk, but I think their memory is limited. Some fish are capable of great feats of memory, like salmon and mono sebae who travel great distances to spawn. But it is probably limited to that type of memory.

Indeed it is nice to see another one of us shrinks on the forum :kana:

I agree it come down to conditioning and instinct which is still under quite a lot of research (which I am sure you know). What amazes me, and I am sure many of you have seen this on planet earth, is how the coral reef spawns at the exact same time with one another. And yes I agree the experimental evidence on classic conditioning is hard to refute, altough I will admit I am unsure as the to the amount of fish that have been tested/treated/conditioned. As say compared to dogs and other pets. Hope to see ya around SouthernCross. :good:

im pretty sure they dont recognize people though. when i fed the morays at work, they swam up to the surface for food even though it was my first time feeding them.

Well my 2 bettas in the 10gallon sure do remember that the hikari baggy= food b/c BOY do they get spazzy whenever I pick it up.
I know it's not just me that they're getting excited over. Like right now... they're doing their own thing, but I know as soon as they see me grab that bag, they're gonna go crazy.

My Common Pleco comes over to the side of the tank nearest to my chair. When I wave he rolls his eye at me! He gets no reward for this other than me waving (they have already been fed). :)
