Do u think fish doesn't has memory? What are the ost fish which can remember?

my mollies still recognize me even after 4 weeks away on course so i reckon they can remember certain stuff, i.e dad = food :)

yep my platies remember me, and they remember everytime a hand goes up to the top of the tank, they swim up to be fed lol.

goldfish have a 2 sec memory span .. proven on MythBusters! .. some fish like oscars are smart and can identify you.

goldfish are very clever. proven on mythbusters! they remembered to swim through holes in deviders to get food.
goldfish arent retards of the fish world, tho i do wonder if maybe you are.

Iv'e seen that mythbusters it was pretty cool to see what they could and couldn't do. :shifty:

I dont really watch mythbusters cause i dont know what channel they are on. But would be kool. I gave a golly away to a teacher( which i now have again) and it rembered me everytime i went into the teachers class room( even after christmas break). So, some fish are more intellgente.

How do you prove that the fish was remebering you? (how do you prove it was a golly? As I rember you didnt really document or isloate for 6 months).

I can tell, cause i have a dalmation and black molly right now, and they dont have the same body shape. And the golly is way over sexual maturaty( has had babies before in a tank with a male dalmation mollie( only fish in there)) and she is only 1 inch and hasnt got any bigger. Secong of all, if it dosent look like a molly, and dosent look exactly like a guppie, then why did it breed with a male dalmation mollie if they are so rare. Also, the reason i know it reconsided me is because every time it see's me it knows food. A kid in the teachers class feeds the fish every day and she said that it never came to the top for anyone in the class, but when i came, it swam directley to the top waiting for food. And how does any of us truley know if our petfish truley reconises us?

LOL.

Hate to break your hearts guys, but your fish don't KNOW you.

It's just another example of classical conditioning. You can get your pets to do just about anything provided a food reward is associated with an unconditioned stimulus enough times. Even then, after conditioning is established, it takes a LOT of continually unpaired trials to make a response extinct again.

Your fish have just associated your approach with the coming of food, and therefore they go bonkers when they see you coming :).

For example, my fish in particular are conditioned to the noise of me lifting the hood and glass lids. I do that (to feed them or otherwise) and they go crazy, my cardinals come out of hiding, etc. It works well when I want them out to take photos! :good:

I will have my B Psych at the end of this year, yay! Once I'd learned the classical conditioning principles (thanks Pavlov!) I've had loads of fun training my pets after understanding the process behind it.

Yeah, but they don't actually know you in person. Also they *proved* it on mythbusters, I think, thought I haven't seen it in a while.

Exactly. That is why I question krib on how he can prove they recognized HIM not just food. Because a fish swims to the top and expects food does not establish recognition. Southerncross is correct in that it is classic conditioning and can be applied to all sorts of animals (and humans although I guess we are animals). I completely agree that a fish may recognize a hand opening a tank meaning food, I am skeptical about a fish merely recognizing its owner other than for food purposes although I am not doubting its possible as all animals continue to amaze me and I cant prove they dont recognize you. I am also a third year psych. major if that really means anything.
