On tthe glass are they little white wriggle things, plus the potatoe howl ong has it been in the tank, remove it and the gravel with the whie stuff on it, soak and swirl in some hot salty water, rinse well, then leave to dry out for a day before you add the bit of gravel back to the tank, or throw it away.

the potatoe (sweet potatoe) was in there over night - the growth was therre in the morning.

The last gravel vac was only a coupl eof days ago, along with a 20 (ish)% water change...

I'm battling hair and thread algae in my two small tanks (10 gallons apiece), and I can say that it is neither of those as far as color goes.

The stuff on the potato looks like fungal growth, but that is only a guess.

Sorry, I am not much help here, only can give you information on what to exclude from the diagnosis.

I thought fungal.

What would be the best way to treat it?

I'd say fungus, too. Remove decaying matter (only thing it will grow on)...my guess is there's some food stuck in the gravel. Be careful of overfeeding.
