Please help. For about a week and a half I have had some white..stuff! on my tank walls. It looks a bit like white algae. But, now its floating in the tank. I have a 54ltr tank. I have checked the water and all is fine. In the tank I have

4 Cherry Barbs
2 Bumblebee Gobies
1 Brown Discus (small)
10 Neon Tetras
4 Tiger Barbs
1 Guppie

This week have lost two (live) plants, not sure if Cherry Barbs have eaten them or if it has something to do with the white stuff (How technical)!!
Any ideas welcome!!!!!! :S

Try posting this in Tropical fish emergencies, maybe it's fungus -_- Do your fish eat all of their food? If they don't fungus grows on it  Maybe you have an overfeeding problem :dunno:

Welcome to the forums! :hi:

By the sound of it you have living bacteria called nematodes thriving in the tank. They are usually caused by overfeeding.

Do they resemble this picture?

If so, try and eradicate the remaining species, cut down your feeding cycle and do a 20% water change.

Hope it helps

Well I don't know about the white stuff, but I believe that your tank is overstocked, and that may also be a problem. Also the mix of fish isn't very good. The gobies are brackish fish, and like salt in their water, which the others may not appreciate. The barbs are fin nippers and will probably bother your discus and your guppy, and discus have been known to eat neons.

Research continued, the species in your tank are 'free-living' nematodes, which means they live outside a fishes body, thus are harmless to all your living matter.
They are most likely Turbellarian flatworms (a form of nematodes), and they tend to populate tanks that are very rich in nutrients from the tank being over-fed or over-stocked with fish. They live in the substrate. The best solution like I said is to do a good water change and vacuum the substrate thoroughly. Then cut back on your fish feeding.

Check to see if this 'algae' is actually moving in a worm like manner....

Thanks for all those new replies, I did realise that my tank is over stocked so I have bought a new tank and will be seperating the fish into both. The fungus photo does not look like what was in my water. (But thanks for advice). :D
The white stuff has cleared and I think it was a bloom of snails as the week after this happened a found quite a few snails  I picked most of them out and only found one last night so I think I have got rid of the pest. My LFS told me that you are no longer allowed to use snail remover for your tank because of goverment laws (pollutes our water or something???)?

I have found that all my fish pretty much live together happily  The only problem I have encountered is that my Bumble Bee Gobies like to eat the Neons tails :( This will soon be fixed with the second tank.

Thanks for everyones help I'll be sure to come back if in need!!!
