Hi I was wondering if anyone can give me some advice please. I noticed that two of my tetras had white spots on their fins I read on the Internet that it might be white spot disease so I turned the temperature up to 30degrees. The spots went down for a day but then came up and spread to the other fish. The tank had been at 30 degrees for 3 days now, what shall I do?

ideally you should have immediatly quarrenteened them and treated for white spot, rather than risk the infection spreading to your whole tank, you will now unfortunatly have to treat your whole tank

The temperature alone won't cure white spot. That simply makes the ich's (white spot) life cycle go more quickly, which is why upping the temperature is used in addition to medications and/or salt. Really all you're doing by raising the temp (unless you do a -lot- of water changes) is making it spread more quickly.

The thing is that ich can only be treated when the spots fall of the fish and begin to reproduce, but if you don't kill them while they're off the fish, they'll just re attach in bigger numbers.

There are a lot of cheap medications for ich, I've had luck with super ich cure by API, and ich attack by kordon, but there are loads of others which are proven effective.

You need to treat the whole tank for a case of whitespot anyway.
