Can anyone help, I have two fantails in a 48 litre tank, when we bought them they were fine, now they have white spots all over them. What's causing this?

White spot, or ich is a type of disease, often bought on by stress.

It probably means the water isn't right. Do you know your water stats? In ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate.

Anyway, raise temp to speed up life cycle of the White spot, dose a whitespot treatment according to instructions on the bottle.

Thanks chrisbassist, we'll take a sample of the water and get it checked, leaving the light on should increase the temp slightly as they are cold water fish arent they.

Are the fish goldfish.
If so you need a 35 to 40 gallon tank.
Plus double fileration due to being massive waste producers.

I was told to also turn the lites off to to cut down on the fish getting stressed and even cover the tank with a sheet or towel. Aquarium salt helps heal too.

Do you mean they told you to turn the filter off.
Is so take no notice as the high temp and med you need more aeration.

Also goldfish shouldn't be kept in that tank size.

No, not the filter just the lites. I had an awful case of Ick and all I did was use the medication, turn the heat up,Aquarium salt and left the lites off.
