Hi,

I have a tank of Neon tetras and Guppies who have recently got white spot. I started treating them with JBL Plunktol ultra about 6 days ago and went to my lfs today to pick up some salts and a de-chlorinator and the woman working there informed me that when treating white spot you need to take the the sponge out of the filter, she also let me read this in a pamphlet in one of the other treatments for whitespot. Before I do this I'd like to make sure that It's true because the bacteria in the filter would die and I'd have to cycle the tank again right? I've dealt with many Lfs workers who have misinformed me and to be honest she knew her stuff. It's a fairly small tank and I would also like to ask about the salts, I got them as mostly a "just in case" it never hurts to be cautious, should I add some now?

Thanks so much,
Shmuckaroo

They must be talking about the carbon sponge pads not all the filter pads.
Agree, only remove carbon or zeolite(ammonia remover)media.

My filter only has one black sponge
If you have no other mature media then you will have to leave it in. Carbon has a short lifespan so fingers crossed it will not effect your meds performance.

Well the fish don't have any white spots on them that I can see anymore so I expect it's not very bad, but because of the gravel and everything I didn't want to take a chance in not medicating them. Anyways I'll leave the filter in and just hope it works, I've added salts and I have my temperature at 80 so hopefully all of these aspects will also help :)

Thanks for the much needed advice!

I'd also like to ask about a list of medications just general kind of 'just in case' things to have around, I don't want to start a new thread and spam.

Sterazin by Waterlife, Melafix by Api, Aquarium salt. These are the meds i keep but if you keep your tank water parameters in check, fingers crossed you won't need them.
