Tank size:35cmx80cmx 45cm
pH:7
ammonia:0
nitrite:0
nitrate:0
kH:
gH:soft (Scotland)
tank temp: 77/25

Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior):One guppy has one
white spot on his head (flat surface between his eyes). Noticed it today after being away from home since Friday night. Seems fine otherwise. The guppies have been a bit aggressive with each other over the weeks. He has been picked on, but has also been chasing others. I have seen the others flick themselves off things every so often over the past few weeks, but nothing regular or obvious.

Volume and Frequency of water changes:Usually do 15-20% once per week. Did one today as there was an ammonia spike (under 0.25 ppm)

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank: 2 logs, 40% planted.

Tank inhabitants:5 male guppies, 6 pristella tetras, 3 otos.

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration): 6 more plants on Thursady, plus some floating ones with trailing roots (can't remember their names). 'Washed' them before adding to tank..

Tanks has been up and running for 5 weeks now. Was fully (fishless) cycled before I introduced the fish.

Exposure to chemicals: None.

Am concerned that this is ich, if I have to turn up the temperature to treat it, that the otos will be well out of thier comfort zone. Advice please!

Does this spot look like a grain of salt on his head? Is it a little lump or is it an open sore?

It could possibly be ich, but usually you see more than one spot.

It is raised but flat, if you see what I mean. It is slightly bigger than a grain of salt I would say. The rest of his skin is healthy looking.

I would treat it as bacterial for now.

I agree with wilder, begin treatign for a bacterial infection now, and if the spot multiplies and other fish get it, then begin treating for white spot instead.

Which medication do I use?! Bought white spot, but decided to have a consultation with TFF first!

Myxazin and primafix if you have it, just check the fish body as sometimes whitespot can start out on fish as very tiny clear bubbles on the fish.

Should be fine as long as the tank has alot of aeration, as they are bottom dwellers and suffer more if not alot of aeration in tank, as meds reduce 02 in the water.

If it does become white spot (ich) then you need to read your directions very carefully. Some meds say to use half a dose with scaleless fish, and otos are considered scaleless. They should be fine with the full dose of the antibacterial med.

This morning the white spot had disappeared (no treatement). This afternoon there was a much smaller one a few millimeteres back. Has the other'one' dropped off to reproduce somewhere?!

Fish can heal themselves, just keep an eye on it, maybe another water change.
