I've got an ill Keyhole Cichlid and I can't sort it out. It has what appears to be a bad infection of white spot but the white spot medication has no effect on it. I've been treating the tank for a week constantly and nothing is helping. I have had white spot before and it clears up within a couple of days.
I'm guessing that I have mis-diagnosed the problem so I've started treating with a broad range treatment now (esHa 2000) and just in case I've kept up with the white spot treatment (esHa Exit). None of the other fish have any sign of a problem which is why I think it's not white spot. If it was then by now it should have spread. Apart from the white spots the only other indication that anything is wrong with the fish is stringy faeces and slightly subdued behaviour.

The only other thing I can think of is a case of Hex, although no pitting is obvious.

Anyone got any thoughts as to the problem?

The following reply is based on my experiance and it is entirly up to weather you do the same, I ca not be held resposable for any subsiquent reactions if you take this advice.

There is a tougher strain of ich and IME the only thing that cures it is a copper based treatment. Copper is highly toxic to all life and any copper treatment should only be attempted if you are posative you know what you are doing.

I have treated this tough strain of ich with Cuprazin at a dose of 1ml per 20ltr consecutivly for 5 days.

overdosing of copper will kill everything.

I can not stress this enough, be careful when using copper based meds.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure whether it is white spot though. I would have expected it to have infected other fish by now. As for copper based meds I think I'll give that a miss. Firstly I do not have a hospital tank at the moment due to a friend breaking their goldfish bowl a few weeks back. Secondly I do not want to use copper as I may one day want to switch to marines.

Thanks for the info though.

How big are the spots on the fish and where, long stringy white poo can mean constipation which i doubt for some reason with your fish, internal bacteria infection, or internal parasites, just check the anus to see if it's enlarged, or red and inflamed, or both, do the spots have a red tinge to them or red circling around them , do they look fluffy.

The spots are everywhere and look just like white spot spots. Small white spots over the body and fins. There's no reddening anywhere. I'm on my third treatment for whitespot and nothing's working so far. Still no transfer to any other fish yet.

are you sure it is white spot
maybe the fish have velvet disease
they are commonly confused.

If it is a white spot (Itch) throw your fish into a hospital tank and just put table salt like 1 - 2 tbsp per gal and raise your heater to 32 degrees C or around 90 degrees F.

Then do 20% water change everyday.

I'm not sure it's white spot at all! That's why I'm treating both esHa Exit (white spot) and 2000 (broad range antibacterial).
I don't have a hospital tank at the moment as explained above.

You can cure the fish in his present tank by putting rock salt (Not Iodized)

And raise the Temp to 32 deg C.

Same thing 20% water change everyday.

Goodluck and keep us posted.

Can't use salt as I have Otos in the tank. I've raised the temp and am continuing medication. the problem hasn't got any worse over the last couple of days now. Hopefully I have it at least in check.

Can you get a clear photograph of the fish?

Well, things seem to have cleared up. The fish is still rather subdued but the white spots have gone and no other fish has them.

Strange!
