hi all got a little problem i noticed a couple days ago white spots on my fish i think this may have been caused by either temp dropping sudenly due 2 heater problems or brought in on new fish (im think the later of the 2 )

rite....

firstly treatment for white spot is in process white spots dropped of fish so in the free swimming process at the moment so fingers crossed all should clear up soon.:) temp was risen to 30 degrees in this process 2 help speed it up abit temps that high for my fish arnt a problem as my fish have lived at 82-84(and never had any deseases) ever since iv had fish but my temp dropped down 2 around 76 in the matter of 24 hours due 2 a faulty heater (now replaced) :)

rite second problem is my fish seem 2 be very lathargic not swimming like there used 2 and they have a white stringy ish poo which i almost positive is an internal bacterial infection (again brought in from new fish prob same 1's ) rite could it be anythink else??? im not 2 clued up on deseases ive never really ever had a problem with them in the past so could do with ur help.

third thing is if it is a internal bacterial problem can i use a treatment at the same time as using the whitespot treatment if yes how do i go aboutt it

here's my water stats cause im sure some 1 will ask for them :)

tank was cycled

amonia 0
nitrites 0
nitrates 20
ph is 7.4-7.6 thats how it comes out of tap :)

fish were all healthy up untill a week after getting these new fish

thanx jen

Hi Jen.

Quick question: Did you increase aeration when you started medicating the tank and increased the temperatures? Because both meds and temperature affect the water's ability to absorb oxygen, and meds in particular affect the fish's ability to get the oxygen from the water. If you didn't increase aeration, that would explain the lethargy.

White poo sounds like it could be internal bacteria, but I'm fairly sure it could be internal parasites as well. The fish would have to see a vet for a proper diagnosis and treatment for either condition :)

Hope that helps :)

the aeration in my tank is very very high anyways i have a very powerful pump breaking surface area with bubbles and my internal filter pretty much does the same at the moment im not using both meds hence the topic wasnt quite sure if i could use both meds 2gether thanx for ur reply

Hmmm . . . so it's not aeration causing the lethargy then. If you need to treat internal problems, you'd need to put carbon/zeolite or something similar in the filter for 2-3 days, then carry out a 25% water change to remove any residual meds in the water :) The only time it's safe to mix medications is when they specifically say it's safe to do so (in which case, both meds used will probably be by the same company) or if a vet tells you it's safe :)
