GRR my tank has an outbreak of white spot. I’m so angry with myself I introduced 3 new fish to the tank and didn’t quarantine them so it’s my own fault . I noticed them yesterday; I went straight out and got some white spot medicine from pets at home; all they had was interpet white spot medicine.

Just wondering what else I can do to help them along (as far as I am aware the interpet medicine is to be used on day 1 (yesterday) and on day 4; if there are any more symptoms then to treat again.

I need to increase the temperature, to around 30oC. They are at around 25 celsius at the minute.

I also read lots of water changes are needed but then it defies putting medicine in the water IF I change it daily. I just did a 50% water change the day before I put the medicine in actually.

Would adding a bit aquarium salt be beneficial?

Stats if it helps on Tuesday before the water change were:
Ammonia = 0ppm
Nitrite = 0ppm
Nitrate = 5ppm (maybe up to 10 but certainly not more than that).

Tank is a female betta sorority.

I’ve had fish for 17 years and this is my first experience with white spot :(

i dont know how bettas cope with salt, but you definitely need to increase temp to 30 degrees, it shortens the life cycle of the parasite.
when we had whitespot i used that medication, did a water change before adding it, didnt do a water change til i'd finished the course. temp stayed at 30 for 2 weeks. not come back :good: you need to increase aeration a lot while you're treating them.

i also vacuumed the substrate the day after the white spots fell off.

Brilliant thank you. I kinda know what to do; I just like someone else to confirm it for me lol. Don't want to harm my girls afterall.

I'll increase the temperature when I get in tonight :)

I was a bit worried about it as my boyfriend used the same make medication for something else and all of his fish were at the surface gasping so we scrapped the medicine and did a 100% water change instead.

I might have to get them a small air pump or turn the air on the filter on (trouble is it's noisy and its in my bedroom :().

There no need to preform water changes if your water stats are good.

Have you removed black carbon from the filter.
Increase aeration as the high temp and med reduce 02 in the water.

The reason for gasping after adding the med could be bad water quality, lack of aeration, over dose of meds, the parasite has infested the gills.

I don't have carbon in the filter :). I'll see how this first dose of medication goes; maybe do a water change at the 7 day mark and treat again :)

My fish have been ok since I added the medicine (the gasping was my boyfriends fish when we added the same make medicine to his tank for something else - water was fine as we'd just changed it before adding the medicine; fish were gasping so we did another water change :))

yep same thing happened here, but it was that or die of ich :crazy: we just got 2 more airpumps. there was a LOT of aeration in there! the more the better tbh :good:

yep and remember to remove carbon and zeolite if you have it :)

Yes you do need to do a water change before you add the second round of treatment.

Only had whitespot once and I used the anti white spot med by interpet. Had no problems with the med. But it took two rounds of meds to get rid of it.

Ok.
Thanks for the update.
Good Luck.
