I have just recentaly aquired a 20 gallon tank that came with rummynose tetras, cherry barbs and corys.
I have noticed on one of the rummynose tetras he has a white spot on the side of his tummy but to me it does not look like ick. Any ideas on what this could be? Maybe a external parasite?
I turned up the heat - its at 81 F because I know that heat helps fight infections.
None of the other fishes in there has this spot.
Im thinking the RN could be stressed as he did have a journey to my house (about 45 mimutes traveling)
I know I cant add salt... What should I do? Im in the process of setting up a sick tank but am waiting on a certain supply so I cant take him out as yet.

Also for a sick tank what should be in the tank? Can I have gravel and a plant? OR should it be with nothing in it?

I really want to save this fish. Hes so unique looking.

Thanks :S

How does the spot loook like? if it hasnt shown up on the other fishes it might not be ich...... if it looks like a little grain of salt, then it probably is ich, but if it looks a bit fluffy, it may be fungus developing, or if it looks like dust, it may be velvet :( Usually velvet is dust like-looking gold/yellowsh spots. A suitable medicene from you LFS (make sure that it is safe for scaleless fishes) will porbably tackle it. Or you may want to do a salt dip on the affected fish, dont raise the concentration to more than .2% as that is the most rummy's can take.

how big is the white spot, does it look fluffy in appearance, does it have a circling of red on the outside of it, sometimes white spot can clear on there own with a few water changes.

I cant really tell you how big the spot is other than if you were to take a pen and make 3 dots thats how big it is if that makes sense.... :/
Also it is kinda pinkish redish too... What does this mean? And none of the other fish have this spot but im worried if its contagious....
I dont think its velvet as its not gold/yellowish.

I was on a fish site and it looks like this -

or this -

But the spot is wayyyyyy smaller. And its not really coming out of the skin alot like that.

For now just do a few daily water changes and if no improvement get back to the board, if might go on its's own,

How much water to change? I was thinking of moving the fish to a sick tank and seeing how it goes there and maybe medicating for a external bacteria infection??
Should I?
Hopefully the sick tank should be ready tonight. -_-

Is the spot red and inflamed begiining to look like a ulcer, it's not a parasite by the sounds of it, sorry didn't see the links before.

Inflammed meaning swollen? Umm it is a round spot that looks irrated because of the red/pinkish color. But I dont think its swollen. Its hard to describe.

Its more like the second link with some white in the middle.

Sent you a pm.

we had something like this on a couple of our Danios - a white spots (in this case both on their lower jaws), which wouldn't shift with white spot treatment, and none of the other fish had it. The best I can describe it as is as a very small zit that looks like it needs to be squeezed!

In between our various treatments they got on fine, spawned a couple of times and could eat ok and weren't in any visable stress, so we left it.

However, after several months it looked like it was getting bigger - so we took them out to treat them in a q tank. We tried them on anti fugus medication, but alas, the course/stress was too much for them and we lost them after a couple of days.
:byebye: :byebye: :rip:

Course of death wholey unknown,
My point is, if the fish don't look too stressed and it doesn't appear to be contagious, then you may need to pursue another line of medication, or it may be that it can be left alone.

Well I moved the RN to the sick tank and added melafix. He seems stressed now so I hope he pulls through.
Could I put the other RN in the sick tank with him? They have been together for so long and I dont want him to be lonely. And plus I know hes a schooling fish.
How will the melafix affect the healthy fish?
Thanks :*
