My tank is fully cycled, added fish. Now have an outbreak of whitespot. Brought interpet no 6.

I am using a fluval 305 which has 3 x carbon filters, can i just remove these not putting anything else in there place. Will my filter work properly and do you think i will lose alot of beneficial bacteria.

Three carbon filters  Sounds a little overkill for most applications, but OK...

Its hard to tell. If they are each relpaced as often as they should, it would be fine, as you would discard all three after a week anyway... This is because it is saturated after this time. I doubt you would have replaced them all this often though, the running costs would be finominal

If the carbon has been in there longer than 2 weeks, you will have an issue with withdrawing it all at once. This is because it will have become covered in substantial amounts of bacteria. Then again it is probibly saturated, and thus less likely to remove meds.

I'd pull 2 today, then leave it 24hours for the bacteria to catch up with it. Then remove the other one before starting the corse of meds. I'd replace at least 2 carbon, possibly all depending on application, permanantly, replasing with a more useful mechanical or bacterial media.

I have in my 404, course prefoams, in the funny frame thingy :shifty: Then medium foams, then fine foams, then 1/2basket of carbon, then 1/2 basket of floss, then finaly bioceramic media to finish.

I find this works for me, but in the 304 you only have 3 baskets... I'd personaly run it with medium pre-foams, then a fine foam, then floss,(or 1/2floss, 1/2 carbon if using it) then the bio ceramic/ bioballs/ other bio media.

This IMO would be more efficient at filtering polutants, and also minimises running costs :good:

Good luck clearing up the whitespot. Increase airation, as that med knocks air out of the water.
