Help again! Now my other platy is passing stringy white poo. I believe this is a sign of internal worms- is it always? Or can it be caused by stress? (She had a long bus journey on Saturday.) She looked a bit offcolour this morning, but now looks fine, swimming around, is eating.

How dangerous is it and what should I do? Have just medicated the tank against finrot, so presumably can't put in anything for the parasites? Or can I?

Tank is 60 ltrs, has 3 guppies, 3 platies in it, no ammonia, no nitrites, nitrates were c. 40 before I did 25 % water change (before putting in medication last night). Fish have only been in there since Saturday but tank was cycled and has not spiked since.

Would salt do any good? Is it very contagious?

First, try feeding some peas. The fish might just be shaken up after the trip and could be a little constipated.

If this doesn't help after a day or so you might want to consider using a medication like Jungle Parasite Clear Tank Buddies, but as you point out you have recently added a med.

Personally I can't advise you about timing between medications or about which doesn't react with the other. Hopefully someone with a better knowledge will read your thread. If not, perhaps you could start one.

When you say she looks off colour do you mean she has darkened in colour as that can be a bacteria infection, and with bacteria infection it can cause the fish to have long stringy white poo, also with internal parasites, they can have a bloated tummy, or they are thin, is the anus red and inflamed and can you see anything prutruding from it.

I didn't mean off-colour as in having a different colour, just that she seemed a little tired and unwell this morning, not out and about the tank as much as she had been. She looks a lot perkier now and her faeces are a normal brown. What do you reckon?

Could of been abit of constipation, try her some shelled peas, keep an eye on her for going to the toilet, good luck.

Thanks for your advice.

Have spent last 2 days trying to decide whether Black Beauty has worms or not. She has passed brown poo too, more so recently and she seems a lot perkier than she did, so perhaps it was just constipation. It was just that the stuff I saw floating out of her rear end 2 days ago did look very transparent and wormlike.

Funny, I didn't get this worried when my son developed the same problem; in fact, I remember laughing heartily and suggesting submitting his bottom for the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. I suppose 8 years of motherhood have left me with a great respect for the resilience of the human body. I don't quite feel that with fish :(

Good, just keep a close eye on her, good luck.
