I'm 4 days into cycling my 60l tank and the water is clearing nicely. What I have noticed is a layer of white particulate on the surface (only visible from underneath). Just wondering if anyone has an idea what it might be. My guess it's the initial bacterial bloom 'clumping' on the surface. Which I presume will eventually sink and get filtered. Our water is quite hard and the ph is slightly >7.0. I've treated the water with Cycle and Aqua plus as per the instructions. I'm not unduly concerned at this early stage of cycling, just wondering what the white bits are.

Many thanks.

you could well be right, sounds like some sort of bacteria bloom. don't worry as your still cycling, all sorts will happen to your water. you should only eb concernedif it's still there when the tanks cycled.

My Tank currently is displaying the same issue and it is just came off a cycle. Im not worrig yet as im just skimming the surface to get rid of it.

I just got home from work and skimmed the top of my tank to remove some more of the white sheet that is covering the surface of my water.

Instead of just going and washing the plastic sheet in the sink after the skimming I whipped the sheet with a paper towel to bunch up all the substance and it was actually a green colour.

No I have a small outbreak of what would appear to be Cynobactria (SP) so I am overdosing flourish excel and has just set up a pressurised CO2 system so I am slowly raising the ppm on that.

I think this may be dead Cynobactria floating on the top of the tank in my case. What is your tank set up?

i dont think it is normal but i am overdosing Excel so im wondering if it is actuly dead bacteria/algea from the overdose. My tank similar the OP has just finished its cycle so it may be left over bacteria from the cycle.
