This afternoon some neighbor kids told me there were fish in a little drainage ditch behind their house. So my kids and I went 5 houses down the street and found the little "stream" which I believe runs into a creek which feeds the river. Sure enough there were tadpoles, crawfish and lots of small fish. We collected several of the fish with a small dip net and took them home. I have them in a 5g tank for now. In their first couple of hours here they have eaten some tropical flakes and granules as well as a little bit of shrimp pellet. Here's the strange part: to my untrained eyes they appear to be WHITE CLOUD MOUNTAIN MINNOWS! Is this possible? Do you guys think they could actually be white clouds? Maybe some hobbist dumped some there and they bred? I collected both adults and fry. What do you guys think?

its actually likely to have white cloud mountain minnows because they exist in streams and can live in water at 5 degrees (this is in the wild though). thats why you find alot in china in streams in the mountains

Yep, could probably be. They live in fast Rushing Streams usually in the mountains of China. So It would not be difficult for them to live where you live (probably).
We need pictures though.

Here's a pic...

Hi,

That looks like a positive ID to me. They definitely look like White Clouds (Tanichthys Albonubes).

I'm not sure of the laws in your state, but i think you may have to inform the local authorities that you have found them in the wild. I'm sure someone else will be able to confirm.

Cheers

Definatley White Cloud Mountain Minnow's. What kinda Damage can they do to an ecosystem? If they cant do any, leave them be, but if they can cause enviromental harm, then alert them right away! But first catch as many as possible and sell them to your lfs! Not much money, but if you get enough, you might be able to but some more fish food!

Every animal not native will have some kind of impact on an ecosystem. They eat food and use shelter that would usually go to native animals. It's hugely debateable however as to wether or not you consider this kind of thing as 'damage' or not.

The verdict is in: white clouds. Now, should I contact the state DNR? Seems I caused a bit of an uproar on another forum asking the same question. There was a big discussion regarding invasive fish.

Yes, IMO, you have an ethical (and possible legal) obligation to inform the proper authorities. No matter how you splice it, those are not native to your area and this will have some type of impact on the existing ecosystme as noted.
