If I move one of the objects in my tank like the cave when cleaning I end up with loads of white bits floating in the tank till they settle again. They are tiny particles. Like when the light shines through and you see dust floating in the air where the beam of light is. They look like that if you know what I mean. They settle again and the tank is clear but what is it?

Yeah these are just bits of debris, small particles in your tank. You can add some filter floss to your filter to try to clear them up, worked for me!

It's like a sort of nylon cotton wool. you put it inside your filter, next to the intake (so the water goes through it first).

Although it can be colonised by bacteria, most people use it for purely mechanical filtration, so you can wash it out in tap water as often as you like.

It's great for filtering out tiny particles like the ones you have and giving a 'polish' to the water :)

Thanks I'll get some. I haven't actually opened this filter yet. It was second hand. It's an Eheim pick 500 internal filter. I have no clue how to even open it and what goes where but I guess I'll figure it out. Can I get any filter floss and just cut it to size?

Yes, it just comes in a bag and you pull off what you need; it's very much like the stuff you get in stuffed toys and cushions (but you can't actually use that as it's normally been treated with a fire retardant these days).
