Hi guys
My tank is currently cycling with 5 zebra danios. I'm trying to decide which fish to get once it's finished cycling and i really like Guppies and Platies. Problem is I can't decide which to get first....do you guys have any advice for me please? Thank you

Hi,

I'd go with platies, guppies are too inbred. Plus you can get loads of different colours of platy. Remember to keep 2 females to every male or keep in a same sex group.

Emma :)

Platies are also inbred a lot too, but not as much as guppies. I would go with guppies because I love their colors more, but whatever you feel that you like, get them, because, as someone once told me, they are going to be living for you for a while :D

hi,
i would go with plattys too,i never had any problems with them when my tank was new,i added guppies almost at the same time but they all died :/ now my tank is mature ive got no probs with keeping guppies,
infact my fav female gave me 30 little pressents yesterday  .

Platies aren't that inbred, Blitz. All fish are inbred to an extreme, to develop new colors and such, but in the Livebearer world, they're doing pretty good. :)

If you want a hardy/hardier, colorful fish go with Platies.
If you want a showy, fancy fish, go with Guppies.

It's up to you, since it's your tank. What size is it? Are you keeping the Zebra Danios in there? If so, you don't want Guppies.

Hi guys thanks for your suggestions! I do eventually want both but want to get the hardiest as the tank will have just finished cycling. So, it looks like i'll be getting Platys first. Anastasia why not guppies? Is it fin-nipping? It's a 71 litre tank

If you keep the Danios in there, the Guppies will most likely not have any fins left. Zebra Danios cannot be kept with fish with long, flowing fins. If they are going to stay in there, then don't get the Guppies. If they aren't, and you want to get both, I'd start out with a trio of both. They WILL have fry, and this will allow you to have some room for them, and keep a couple. Of course, then there's the inbreeding aspect....but if you get the members of the trio from different stores, you should do OK for a while. :)

I have heard a rumour that platys poo a lot is this true or is it that they eat more?

Should the tank be cleaned out more often?

Also my lfs has white mickey mouse platys and variegated if ! got three of both would they mix breed to orange micky mouse or stick with their own group ?

how about guppies?

thanks

Hi Sally2
I ended up getting platys AND guppies. I decided that, after i got the platys, the zebra danios were really only interested in each other so i took the plunge and got guppies too. So far there has been no fin nipping and the danios are still only interested in each other.

As for your question about Platy poo - boy do they have long poos!! It hasn't caused a problem in my tank as yet and i do a 20% water change once a week. One thing that 'loosens their bowels' a bit is cooked peas (with the skin/shell taken off. All the fish in my tank go mad for it!!

A LOAD OF GUPPIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
