I love them all but I really like the half moons and the crown tail the most. I think they are gorgeous. Anyways I'm going to be getting a new tank next week a 20 gallon and would really like to get another male betta. My betta (Sam) will stay in his tank but i would like to try my hands on breeding and would like to breed either of the two i mentioned in the beginning. I will b getting a 20 gallon tank with all of the goods including many hiding places and want to know if any specific type of betta is harder to breed ie. more stuborn than others. I know it may take a few tries but I really love these little guys and want to try it myslef. But not for a while I want to get the male sometime in the next few weeks to break in the tank and then in a month or so get the female. Anyways what do yall think? Also can you breed different types of betta togather like halfmoons and crown tail because those are my favorite!

I don't know much about breeding but I do know you can't keep male bettas with other bettas (unless the tank is divided). This includes females. Males and females don't get along, and can't live together. As far a breeding them. You need to get a tube shaped containter, the female goes into the tube. They need to see each other, do a little fishy flirting, and you are still not sure they will like each other. Plus before this even take place both fish need to be conditioned. It takes alot of time and paitience. Do ALOT of research, ask the people on the forum that really know how to breed bettas. Also be prepared if the spawn goes well you need to know the care and feeding of baby bettas. From what I have been told, that the real work begins when the babies come along.

Hey canadien

Crowns and Halfmoons are def awesome, but dont count out some really cool strains of VT or SD.

How much do you know about breading bettas? It seems you have the right intentions, but might not exactly know what it entails. There are certainly a lot of members here that can attest to the amount of work it is. If you know what you are talking about and I have misjudged, then my appologies.

Breeding bettas isn't as simple as placing a male and a female into a tank with hiding places.

You have to have separate tanks that you condition the bettas in (feeding live and nutritious food). Then you need a breeding tank setup pretty bare with a sponge filter, some styrofoam for a bubblenest, and a cave of some sort. Then you have to introduce the female in a separated container or something of the sort.

The biggest part is to figure out what you are going to do if you get 20 or even 60 fry. Are you prepared to house and these fish and keep a live culture of baby brine shrimp to feed them?

What I'm getting at is that there is a lot that goes into it and it is often times not as simple as people think. This was in no means a "guide" to breeding bettas. Just making some points. If you are in fact serious about breeding, there are many people on this site that are knowledgeble, experienced, and willing to help out. The genetics of bettas can get pretty in depth. There are "Half Suns" (HM CT) out there, but I have no idea what sort of combination or what generation of bettas produce this.

Hope that helps you out a bit. Glad you are interested in breeding em and providing a good home. :good:

edit: i had a bunch of windows open and metromyers beat me to it ;)

I have read that Bettas should not be kept in huge tanks maximum 5 gallon or even less, infact one breeders site said thay are happiest in small bowls.

please do not give advice on fish in these forums until you have read and have a bit of common sense.

Steering people in the wrong direction can have very detrimental consequences if they read what you have said and believe it.
