Hi All
I have just started to build up a new tank setup with my wife, and we have decided to use silicone to fix the decor we have bought, eg: resin rock,to the back of the tank.Could anyone please tell us which is the cheapest and best silicone to use as we need quite a bit. Can it be purchased from somewere like B&Q or do we have to get it from the aquatic shop.
Sorry to sound a bit thick, but Ive never used silicone in any of my tanks, years ago.
All the best StevieH

Hi stevie. I know people who have used B&Q silicone, but I personally would not recommend it. Most LFS will sell aquarium putty or adhesive / silicone. I would go for the latter

any glass or aquarium silicon will be fine. Check out the local hardware, they are usually cheaper than the LFS.
Glass & Aquarium silicon is the same stuff. As long as the directions say it is suitable for glass or aquariums then that is fine.

Yes in the most part, but some glass silicones have some nasty chemicals to avoid discolouring and antifungal. If you are getting normal glass silicone, make sure it has nothing added

I would always recommend proper aquarium silicone. Its not expensive (around £5 per tube) and at least you can have some assurance that it is safe. Most LFSs should stock it.

I agree. I have seen so many cases where bacteria have resided in the silicone. Go to the LFS mate. best to be sure
