I have seen both recommended. Which is better for plant growth?

Lights on 12 hours straight?

or

Lights on for a while, then off, then on for a total of 12 on?

Thanks
-Nick

i just keep mine on at night, and off during the day. they are in a bright room anyway, but i dont want my fish to be in total darkness unless they are in hiding

and the plants dont seem to mind

A straight ten hour photoperiod will be sufficient for your plants. From what I understand, algae "wakes up" before your plants, so having two lights on periods during the day is just giving algae a little kick start twice as often. The siesta is only really for allowing CO2 levels to build up again.

You could try the midday burst method if you have separately switchable lights ie 1WPG for three hours, 2WPG for four hours, 1WPG for three hours. Quite a few of us with high light tanks are using this method to slow things down a little.

Dave.
