You will need to provide more details on your potential setup (size of the tank, stocking level, etc). If your tank is going to be small (55g or smaller), you can get away with a single or two power filters without spending a fortune in filtration setup.

In general, canisters will be more efficient than power filters but they generally cost more as well. If you decide to go with a large tank (75g+), then a combo of power filter (such as Aqua Clear 500 or Emperior 400) and a canister (such as Eheim 2217 or Filstar XP3) would be ideal.
