I am planning to start a new aquarium with mainly guppies, however I don't know which flake food is best for enhancing guppies color. I have read and came up with three kinds of flakes:

Tetra Min tropical flakes

Tetra color tropical flakes

Tetra color plus tropical flakes

Any of those three should give you good colour in your guppies, they also like picking at live plants and any other foods you can give them such as defrosted brine shrimp (or live ones if you ave them), blood worms and even live mosquito wrigglers will all be scoffed with relish. My guppies also go nuts over sinking algea wafers and sinking shrimp pellets. They also seem very partial to the tropical micro pellets made by HIKARI.

Just a couple of pics to give you an idea of the colour of some of my male fish.

I know the pictures aren't fantastic but they wont stay still, but I will say they positively glow when seen in sunlight !

Thank you! However which of the above would be the best for my fish giving it color and nutrition they need? I'm more concerned of color over nutrition

It should be the other way around. If they get the proper nutrition, have a clean tank and stressless conditions, their colors will be fantastic. Mine are.

So tetra min then? Becuz tetra min tends to have more nutrition, if that's the case, then what's tetra color for if tetra min works better for colors??.

The best way to get good colour in your guppies aside from starting with good stock, is (can't remember exactly the name) a type of algea that the fish uses as a sort of chemical anchor for getting colour. One of my old fish books explains it in detail but at the moment I am having trouble locating the exact reference.

I am pretty sure it's not spirulina (although it wouldn't hurt), I will have to do some checking through my books and get back to you later.:good:

Hello I want to know what flake food is best for guppies color and for nutrition, I've done research and came up with these brands please reply if there are better flakes out there: I am planning to buy one or two of these

Tetra color tropical flakes

Tetra color plus tropical flakes

Tetra min tropical flakes

Aquaeon tropical flakes

I am also planning to feed freeze- dried or most likely frozen hikari brine shrimp, is this enough or do I need more different food

Most flake food is all pretty similar, i dont think one will bring more colour out than an other one. all the ones you've listed will be fine. :good:

I can't find the actual information but basically a guppy's colour is determined by the number of melanphores present in there body. From what I remember about the article there is a chemical compound found in certian algeas which the guppy metablises into their body and it attaches to the melanphores within the guppy, thus enhancing their colour. There are many other factors to take into account when trying to improve colouration and far to long winded to try and post it all here. If you can try to get a copy of ( a library may have it in stock or even a second hand book shop) Illistrated Dictionary of Tropical Fishes by Hans Frey, this book in conjuction with Encyclopedia Of Tropical Fishes by Dr. Herbert R. Axelrod and William Vorderwinkler will be very informative for you.

After being recommended to try New Life Spectrum products by fishguy, I would definitely recommend them, a little more expensive than your standard fish food but the quality of the food is fantastic, the difference is really noticeable.

Try a granular food containing Astaxanthin.
You can buy this from an associate of mine (Tim Addis) at http://www.ta-aquaculture.co.uk/
