I will be setting up my first tropical fish tank soon and was wondering if keeping tetras, guppies, mollies and a Pleco would work.
Is there anything I should look out for ?

Plecos grow up to 48cm lol but you shouldnt get any problems keeping those fish together there easy to keep.

They could all work well, depending on the size of the tank and the water.

Plecs can grow to 2 foot long, depending on the species. If you have a 60 litre + tank there are several smaller plecs, such as the bristlenose and bulldog plecs, that would be fine.

Tetras can be nippy so I'd pick them or the guppies to save the guppies' fins, but many people keep them together well.

Mollys need hard water, so if your tap water is acidic or soft, I'd avoid them.

If you wanted to keep all those guys together, a well planted 70 litre tank would be a good option. Make sure you get a small plec, and not just one that looks small in the shop! Max size 4 inches.

Welcome to TFF! What size tank do you plan to set up? :hi:
The tank is 3 foot don't know how much water it holds.
Thanks for replying guys. :)

Most tetras will be fine. There are some pretty large species out there (such as congos) so avoid anything larger than about 3 inches adult size :good:

Stick with a small plec - there are some expensive L number plecs, as well as bristlenose and bulldog plecs that stay small. Don't get a common, gibbiceps or sailfin!

Mollys will be fine if you have hard water

Guppys should be fine, just don't put them with anything that will eat them/bite their fins.

If you want a pleco...go with a Bristlenose pleco/catfish. You can find them in albino too. If you keep tetras with guppies be sure the tetra has a couple tank mates of the same species. Will cut back on fin nipping if your tank is big enough.

My little brother keeps a single black skirt tetra with a female molly and they seem to get along well.

Always go as big as you can with tanks. I went with a 5.5 gallon a year ago and now I'm paying the price because my tank is too crowded and I keep wanting more fish, but simply don't have the room!!

Mollies guppies platies and swordtails go well together and will give you a colourful non=aggressive community tank ideal for beginners, plus you iwll have lots of fry! Add a small plec (bristlenose, bulldog etc) or maybe a few cory catfish For interest also add a few apple snails, they grow the size of a walnut and come in lots of colours
