Many cichlids can be community fish but you need to define what kind of community you would like. What size tank would you be using? What kind of fish would you want to have the cichlids with? If you want a small 20 gallon community (which would be the smallest I would recommend with any cichlid) you could use some dwarf cichlids like Kribensis, Rams or some Apistogrammas. Those cichlids should work with most small fish like tetras, common livebearers, and barbs. If its a 55 gallon community with larger fish like Silver Dollars you could use firemouths or even convict cichlids. In even larger tanks Oscars are considered to be a good community cichlid for the most part (though occasionally with all size fish you will get an overly aggressive specimen).
My suggestion is to go buy a good book on aquarium fish that can probably give better examples and information on specific species. Good books can be the best investment for a fish keeper.
