As my Camera has died and my birthday is fast approaching I am getting a new camera

I can't afford a SLR but am bidding on a Cannon G9 on ebay

I am also tempted by a Fujifilm FinePix S8000fd

Any thoughts on which would be better a 2nd hand G9 or a new Fujifilm?

Any other ideas would be appreciated

In my opinion cameras are something you should pick yourself mate. I read reviews on the net for the technical stuff then goto Jessops and have a play if I like it I buy it simple.

But what one person wants out of a camera another person might not be bothered about and as it is usually a lot of money then that is why I say do a bit of reading and go from their.

DPreview & Steves digicams are two good review site :good:

BTW both are at least good makes but you are comparing two very different cameras their!

I would agree there - test them at jessops and then go home and buy for less off the net....

You could get yourself a nikon d40 for less than the S8000d if you look around the web. The other good place to try is the london camera exchange for second hand kit.

I have a FinePix S9600 bridge camera and would deffo consider the S8000fd as a follow up. Definately best to go and handle the cameras for yourself though :D

Thanks

What I'm looking for is something that I can get decent pictures of my fish & tanks with

All my marine tank pics have been taken with the S9600 and I can't fault it for being a great camera without having to worry about what lense you've got on etc :D

ive got the finepix s1000,i find it a brill camra, but like the others have said on here its up to the individual.
just got mine at xmas so still finding loads out about it,macro on it is brill for close up shots

I would not personally recommend an SLR for someone who isn't actively searching for one mate. Trouble is the lens becomes an issue and unless you are talking serious wads you are not necessarily going to get much better pics out of the camera.

Example I had a Coolpix 8700 absolute stunner but for two things - Slow as a snail and very poor low light capability with noisy images above 200. Went to a Canon 350d with kit, Sigma 17-70 Macro and couple other lens's and I love the speed, low light and ease of use BUT I could still produce some better images under *certain* circumstances - especially with 8700 in full manual compared to 350d in full auto! I can't get near to the macro shots I got on my 8700 with my £350 + £230 camera / lens combo (and lens is macro capable with same mag factor).

Also if I increase aperture on SLR to let more light in I lose depth of field - great for arty shots and when you want to accentuate certain features (which I often make use of) but not so good for fish snaps so I rely on combination of extra light / mid aperture and high ISO - noise can creep in!

Saying that I wouldn't ever go back lol :hyper:

Thanks for the replies

I have now ordered a Fujifilm Finepix S8100fd - got a good price on a refurbished one

I use the Fuji S9500, the earlier version of Jennybugs, have to agree with her, they are great, no need to worry about buying seperate lenses but you get so much more than compact cameras.

You made a good choice

Thanks - looking forward to getting it on my birthday

I've got a canon powershot g9 and have found it to be an awesome camera. imo one of the best prosumer cameras out there. It's not perfect by any means, but then it's a compact camera and not an SLR. Most compacts suffer from the same issues, can struggle in low light, grainy pics at high ISO etc.
