I have read on the forum that plecos don't like salt. I have guppies in water with the 1 tablespoon per 5 gallong rule and they seem to love it! so what algae eater can I use? I would think one that is salt tolerant and doesn't grow to be a foot long would be preferable.

I don't know of any...

As for the rule, it doesn't exist. I'd say most tropical tank owners on this forum never use salt. You don't really need it. As you can also see, it limits your choices, too because corydoras and other cats, silver dollars, and such fish don't do well in tanks with even low salinity. :/
