I'm usually very good at finding old threads, but this time I just can't. A couple of months ago or so, someone (obviously can't remember who) wrote to one of the dechlorinator manufacturers and said they had an "accident" and hugely overdosed with dechlor - and wanted to know what the effects were.

Can anyone remember this thread and give me the link ?

 no - just wanted it for "research purposes" ;)

Wow... I didn't think dechlorinators could harm your fish no matter what... I've never measured and just dumped some in and they have all seemed fine...

I generally don't measure euther (I use Stress Coat). If I do measure, I always treat at the level for replacing the slime coat (double the dechlorinating dose).

I haven't bothered to read that other thread... but overdosing dechlor is bad for the fish because most contain aloe vera and other stuff that deliberately irritates the fish to produce a slime coating. Excessive use can cause harm.

;) In that case you should "bother" to read the other thread

Ok I read it, and I stand by what I said. The reply deals with the affects of chemicals to remove chlorine and chloramine, not the effects of overdosing fish with aloe vera and similar additives which are specifically designed to irritate the fish and stimulate slime coat growth.

I understand what you are saying - and I will never purposely hugely overdose - however I will also have to believe their studies and results with regards to the effect on the fish in case of overdosing.

Exposing the fish to anything not found in their natural habitiat is discouragable.

Aloe vera, and even supposedly inert chemicals like those found in dechlorinators should be avoided wherever possible. In the case of dechlorinator, the dechlorinator is considered the lesser evil to chlorine, and is pretty unavoidable.

hmmm... i too never measure my dechlor... with no detrimental effects. I don't think I hugely overdose though - i'd never purposefully put a whole bottle of dechlor into a ten litre water change...
