Where do your fish shoal?

It is reasonable to expect that six golden barbs would shoal together, so why then do 4 shoal and 2 spend their time under the filter?

Do other fish need to be in there to "make" them shoal?

I had the same thing with about 5 rosy Barbs... It was always 3 and 2. May not have been the same 3 and 2, but they were always paired off. I have no idea why they all didnt swim together. Must just be a personality thing.

schooling/shoaling fish don't ALWAYS do it. i have hatchets that sit in a group of 4 with a loner 5th one. my cories do the same. sometimes my loahces will do this, a pair will hang out while the third goes off and does its own thing. i found this that might explain it:
