ok so i have two platy's.. one male, one female... anyway, when i fed my fish last night i noticed that the female had balloned up, she was massive and when i say massive, i literually mean huge!! i knew she was pregnant and when my partner saw her, he instantly said 'she's pregnant, no doubt about it'

i was so excited (never had fry before!) that i watched her for most of the evening and night before i went to bed... she looked very happy, but keep to the bottom of the tank, but all was well when i went to bed...

so i woke this morning and planned to get a breeding trap today after work, but i looked in the tank and..... well she wasn't fat anymore!! great, fry i thought! i looked around the tank for ages (i was looking for so long that i was very late for work!) and no fry! i looked everywhere.. no fry!

whats going on?! was she actually pregnant to start with or did i dream it?! if she wasnt pregnant, then why was she so round and fat? her belly was dark on the whole underside of it, if you looked at her from the back, she was very larger and boxy....

could the fry have been eaten??

please someone help me and explain what could of happened? im new to this

thanks
Laura

Hay Laura,

I'm new to this also but im affraid the fry could have been eaten...fish eat fish world out there :(

Same happened with me a week ago...but i managed to save 2 fry thats it :( :)

Hope you will see some, there will be some somwhere they are sooo good at hiding and gettin into small cracks and tiny spaces just wait and see...hope that helps "H"

I had this experience with one of my femae swordtails last week, was sure she was pregnant but then she went thin again. I put it down to either eating to much or being constipated!

well she was going to the 'loo' loads.. everytime i looked, she was going.. could it be consitpation?? i couldnt believe how big she was though.. massive and she looked very happy just swimming around... if she was consitpatied, wouldnt she act strange and look unhappy and unhealthy??

i will be going home after work and looking even closer to see if i can see any fry... i hope so!

the BIG problem is though.... i have two dwarf puffers in the tank aswell... so if the fry get eaten, i know who by! im thinking of taking them back to LFS but boyfriend wont let me... but i think ill do it when he's not around!! there cute and i love them and there cool character, but not ideal for my tank, especially if i have fry!!

It seems kind of odd that she would just get huge in one night and then drop fry the next day.... mine have always been really fat for at least a week, if not longer and than drop fry as I saw the little black eyes getting closer to the anal fin. If she did drop fry, and you are using gravel, you wont imagine how really really small they are, and where they can fit... look in the gravel around the outside edges of the glass (some of mine would squeeze themselves inbetween) they are pretty hard to spot unless they are moving. You dont even want to know how hard it is to see danio fry... you almost need a magnifying glass... they are like eyelashes with eyes basically (danio fry, not platy fry) Good luck, you may or may not have fry in there.

i had a preggers molly then i woke up one morning and she was skinny as a bone no fry made it unfortunately, shes pregnant again and i`m going to be prepaired this time with lots of floating plantage for them to hide in although i don`t hold out much hope for them
