When Will She Have Her Babies?

ok so i have a sunset platy that is getting fatter and fatter. she has a black gravid spot, but it's hard to see the little eyes cuz she is too shiny in the light. I got her 2 weeks ago from the store and she had the gravid spot when i got her.

Can i assume she had been pregnant at least a week when i got her and now she has at least been pregnant for 3 weeks?

When can i expect her to give birth?

Oh and does anyone have a pic of a platy that is squared off cuz i don't understand that part?


any help would be appreciated, this is my first pregnant fish so im really excited!

Hi there

well my blue platy had 71 fry yesterday,this isn't a very good pic,but it you look at her belly its very low and appears to have a square look to it from the side,the back end near her anal fin has dropped to give her this square look instead of being round.



This is how she looked a week after the last drop,has you can see shes quite round by her anal fin.

yeah she kinda looks that shape. oh and do they always have a birthing tube out or whatever? i've heard bout it but don't really know much

yes you will notice a white tube/ball by her anal fin,when she's getting ready to drop you will notice a tiny black dot in the centre.

Some females hide away behind plants or up by the heater/filter,my blue platy does this first off for about a week then she appears to race up and down the side of the tank when she's dropping,i managed to catch her in the trap,10 hours later she had a whooping 71 fry!!

she had 6 overnight last night and now i'm hoping to have more today! (she actually had 7 that i know of but one was eaten) how long should it take for her to have the rest of the babies?

Mine took around 10 hours to drop 69 in the trap,nothing apart from 7 in the first few hours,then around 8 hours later she popped out the rest

She may drop some more,i believe some take a day or so to drop.

i still only have 6. is it possible for her to still have some to give birth to? she still has eyes in her gravid spot, only not as many and the spot is about half the size it was.
